Kindle WiFi vs 3G
Reading is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Books contain new worlds, new ideas for people to escape into and explore. They are a wealth of interesting facts and information just waiting for you to discover them. There’s only one problem though… books are heavy, and take up a lot of space. That’s why a gadget such as a Kindle is so marvellous. With the Kindle, you are able to store an entire library into your pocket.
What is a Kindle?
The Kindle is one of the latest pieces of technology to hit the stores. It is an eBook (electronic book) reader which is made and sold by Amazon. It allows people to browse for, shop, buy and download many forms of electronic media including blogs, newspapers, magazines and of course, eBooks.
It is intended to simulate reading on paper and uses a special high contrast E ink in order to do so. E ink is designed to give an eReader such as the Kindle the same kind of reading experience, contrast and clarity you would expect from looking at a printed page. Unlike reading on a cell phone or laptop, for example, reading on a Kindle in direct sunlight presents no problems.
As the Kindle is designed for the express purpose of reading books, it does not support colour or games, although you are able to play audio files such as audio books and MP3s. You are able to connect to the internet, but the web browsing capabilities are pretty limited, meaning that you pretty much have to stick to amazon.com, Wikipedia and a few other eBook sites.
When looking for books for your kindle, you can either download them straight to to your device from the website you purchased them from, or you can load them to your Kindle from your computer, using the USB cable provided.
Kindles are able to read a variety of different file types including plain text files (files with an extension of .txt), unprotected mobipocket files (these have an extension of either .MOBI or .PRC), amazon.com Kindle files (.DRM) and Portable Document Format files or PDFs. At this point, Kindles so not support the increasingly common .ePub files.
Kindle WiFi vs Kindle 3G
We are currently on the third generation of Kindle, of which there are two types. The main differences between the two are the connectivity and the price. They are the Kindle WiFi and the Kindle 3G. many people disagree on which one is best, so it’s a good idea for you to take a look at each type and determine which one meets your needs.
Kindle WiFi
The Kindle WiFi uses WiFi connectivity to connect to amazon.com and buy books without connecting to a computer. This is useful if you have access to a WiFi connection at home that you can use freely. The Kindle WiFi is slightly cheaper than the Kindle 3G at around $115.
Kindle 3G
Kindle 3G has wireless capabilities too, but its main feature is its ability to make use of 3G connections and use amazon’s whispernet network to download books at no extra cost, making it possible for you to purchase and download books when visiting other countries. This is useful if you have no access to a WiFi network, or if you plan on doing a lot of travelling. The Kindle 3G is a bit more expensive that the kindle WiFi, going for about $190.
